Internet and Cyber Safety

Cyber Awareness for Parents

1. Talk to your children about online risks like grooming, bullying, and stalking.
2. Set clear rules for internet use and gaming.
3. Watch for changes in behavior, such as being secretive or spending too much time online.
4. Explain what online grooming is and warn children about how strangers may build trust to misuse them.
5. Teach kids to keep privacy settings strong and not to remove them just to get more friends.
6. Warn them never to click unknown links or download files from strangers.
7. Cover webcams when not in use to prevent spying.
8. Install antivirus and parental control software on devices, and regularly check privacy settings.
9. Keep operating systems and apps updated to prevent hackers from exploiting weaknesses.
10. Use trusted sources only for apps, games, and software.
11. Use secure and updated browsers with safe browsing tools.

Cyber Awareness for Teens and Young Adults

1. Protect your online presence just like your real-life identity.
2. Use correct privacy settings on social media to control who sees your photos and posts.
3. Be careful when accepting friend requests from strangers.
4. Learn how to block or remove anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
5. Always log out of accounts after use.
6. Lock your phone with a password, PIN, or biometric.
7. If you find a fake account of yourself, report it immediately to the platform.
8. Be cautious with video chats—remember they can be recorded without your permission.
9. Do not take or share sensitive personal photos/videos on smartphones, as they may sync automatically to cloud storage and remain recoverable even after deletion.
10. Take steps to permanently remove sensitive content from all connected devices if it is ever created.

Protecting Against Cyber Stalking

1. Do not share personal information such as phone numbers and email IDs with strangers.
2. Turn off location sharing on social media and mobile devices.
3. If you feel you are being stalked online, consult trusted relatives or friends.
4. Stay alert about fake accounts and false information online.
5. Be cautious when browsing sensitive websites such as banking or shopping portals; only use your own secured devices or trusted networks.
6. Avoid public computers, cyber cafés, or free Wi-Fi for private activities.
7. Erase personal data permanently before selling, repairing, or giving away your device.
8. Only download apps or software from official sources like the Play Store, App Store, or verified company websites.

Reporting Harmful Content

1. Sharing or storing child pornography (CP), Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), or explicit rape content is illegal.
2. Inform anyone sharing such material that it is a crime and must be stopped.
3. Report such content to social media platforms or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in

Cyber Awareness for Organizations

1. Organizations should have clear policies against possession or sharing of illegal or obscene material.
2. Employees caught with such content should be investigated, and evidence should be preserved securely before reporting to the police.
3. All other copies must be deleted immediately.
4. Reporting can also be done via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
5. Publication, collection, or distribution of CSAM or explicit material is a crime under the IT Act, 2000:
A. Section 67 & 67A: Punishes publication and distribution of obscene or sexually explicit material online.
B. Section 67B: Criminalizes browsing, creating, downloading, or sharing child pornography.
